Grinding

Either grinding wheels or belts may be used; the latter are more serviceable, because they are more easily changed, capable of conforming to a variety of casting shapes and require no dressing. Grinding wheels allow higher precision.

It is suggested that the coarsest belt possible be used that will produce the minimum acceptable surface finish. Belts in the 40-80 grit range will reduce loading and increase productivity. Although lubrication is not generally necessary, the use of a paraffin wax lubricant can help to reduce heat buildup and belt loading where metal removal rates are high. Belt speeds of the order of 600 m/min are appropriate.
