Casting Study: Blackplate support pad for pin printer

Modern printers require a pin support which must be cast pore free, non-deformable, and of precise dimensions. Because of the large numbers of units produced, the life of the die is a determining factor. From the client’s point of view, the sound dampening qualities of zinc castings is an important feature to ensure quiet operation of the printer. The striking surface is coated with a plastic film, so further surface treatments are unnecessary. The much longer die life was a particular advantage for zinc over aluminium die casting.
