Casting Study: Automatic force wedge

The automatic force wedge shown is part of the additional locking devices of the mechanical-automatic door lock “Roto Safe A | Tandeo”. With this door lock, front doors can be locked automatically without using a key. In conjunction with an additional drive unit, the front door can be conveniently opened electromechanically without a key. The automatic force wedge is used in the upper and lower areas of the door rebate and meets the highest standards of comfort and security.

The strength of the automatic force wedge is fundamental to the door lock’s resistance to attempted break-ins in accordance with resistance classes RC 2 and RC 3 according to EN1627. The special feature of this cast part is its design and implementation as a material composite between an insert made of carbonitrided steel and die-cast zinc. The often uneconomical mechanical processing of steel is compensated for by enclosing it in die-cast zinc. This creates a perfect synergy of the strengths of steel and die-cast zinc. At the same time, the use of the ZP0410 (ZAMAK5) alloy provides a high level of corrosion resistance when used in the building envelope.

The combination of the two materials steel and zinc opens up additional possibilities in product design, construction and durability.
