Casting Study: Case for Wendt & Kühnangel figure
The award-winning cast part “suitcase” is based on the original of a suitcase and represents a decorative part in the series of collectible dolls, made of wood. While suitcases were made of leather many decades ago, there was a separate edge protection with attached edges Leather corners. The case from the zinc die-cast series suggests at first glance that it is a simple cast part. The attention to detail and precision can only be seen at second glance. The cast case is based exactly on the natural model. The 8 case corners described are minimally small and each protrude 0.2 mm from the actual case body. The case lid of the decorative part is also precisely manufactured and protrudes 0.5 mm from the original, true to the scale. This small component is very large in the implementation of mold construction and the design of the ejector in the tool. With regard to the small parts of the workpiece and the requirements on the material surface, which is galvanically gold-plated in the further processing, the mold construction is true watchmaking.
The jury honored the “case” component with the winner’s trophy in the “Lifestyle” category because of the particular challenges in toolmaking to implement the small and detailed cast part.
